The ready-made breaks in 2027

New Year’s Day on Friday 1 January gives a three-day weekend through Sunday 3 January for a standard weekend roster. Eight Hours Day on Monday 8 March gives Saturday 6 to Monday 8 March. The King’s Birthday on Monday 14 June gives Saturday 12 to Monday 14 June. These examples do not require an extra leave day.

A long weekend is a combination of public holidays and your normal non-working days. A worker rostered on weekends may have a different outcome. Use the holiday dates as inputs to your own roster rather than treating the examples as a promise of time away for every worker.

Easter: four days away, or ten with four leave days

The natural Easter break runs Friday 26 to Monday 29 March 2027. Taking Tuesday 30 March to Friday 2 April as approved leave can extend it to ten consecutive days, ending Sunday 4 April, for a standard Monday-to-Friday roster. This calculation uses four leave weekdays and the next weekend.

Easter Tuesday is not counted as a general public holiday in this example. It generally applies to the Tasmanian Public Service, so someone covered by that arrangement may calculate their leave differently. Confirm it before assuming the Tuesday saves a leave day.

Australia Day: a short break with one leave day

Tuesday 26 January is the public holiday. Taking Monday 25 January as approved leave joins it to Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 January. The result is a four-day break with one leave day for a standard weekend roster. It is a useful option if a full week away is impractical.

When comparing trips, count travel time as well as days away. A four-day break can feel shorter if the first and last days are largely spent travelling. Compare a local stay with a longer journey, and check change conditions before booking around a leave request that has not yet been approved.

Christmas: join the additional weekday holidays

The calendar includes Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 December alongside Christmas Day and Boxing Day on the weekend. Three approved leave days on Wednesday 29, Thursday 30 and Friday 31 December can create nine consecutive days away from Saturday 25 December to Sunday 2 January 2028.

This example stops on 2 January and does not assume any later 2028 holiday. If extending the break into the next working week, open the 2028 calendar and calculate it separately. Also distinguish your employer’s Christmas shutdown from the public holiday list: a shutdown may use leave on days that are not public holidays.

Add the regional options that actually apply

Royal Hobart Regatta on Monday 8 February and Recreation Day on Monday 1 November can form local three-day weekends in their respective coverage areas. Thursday show holidays may join to a weekend with one approved Friday leave day. Royal Launceston Show and Royal Hobart Show occur on different October Thursdays.

Use the Hobart–Launceston comparison before adding local dates. Cup holidays have limited application and timing notes, so a Wednesday Cup entry should not automatically become a full day off in your plan.

Compare leave efficiency with practical value

A plan using fewer leave days is not automatically the best trip. Compare total days away, leave requested, accommodation availability, travel time and the dates other people can join you. Keep public holidays, approved leave and normal days off labelled separately so the calculation remains easy to check.

Use the Annual Leave Planner for the leave calculation and the Long Weekend Planner to compare breaks. Then verify regional coverage and your roster against the TAS 2027 calendar.

Common questions

How can I get ten days away at Easter 2027 in Tasmania?

For a standard weekend roster, combine Good Friday to Easter Monday with approved leave on 30 March–2 April. That gives 26 March–4 April, using four leave days.

Does ANZAC Day create a statewide three-day weekend in Tasmania in 2027?

The shared TAS calendar does not list an additional statewide holiday on Monday 26 April. Do not use ACT or NT substitution dates for a Tasmanian plan.

Can Royal Hobart Show create a four-day break?

Where its Thursday holiday applies, approved Friday leave plus a normal weekend can create four days away. Check coverage and your roster first.
